What are the side-effects and risks of IVF treatment?

Happiness is not restricted to having children and starting a family. It is much more than that, it is about living a good and healthy life. Majority of the couples have to go through the trauma of not being able to have a child. There is nothing wrong in not being able to have a child, but our society has created a bad atmosphere around the couples who can’t conceive. Not only this unwanted pressure drains them physically, but it also breaks them mentally.
IVF has become one of the best possible treatments for a childless couple. IVF involves combining the sperm and the egg outside the body in a laboratory. Once the embryo or embryos form, they are placed in the uterus. IVF is a complex and expensive process, only 5% of the couples with infertility go with this method.
IVF can be a treatment for your partner if he/she has
  • ·   Low sperm counts
  • ·    Problems with ovulation
  • ·   An unexplained infertility problem
  • ·    Endometriosis
  • ·      Problem with uterus or fallopian tube

IVF is not the first step in the treatment of infertility. It only comes into play when fertility drugs, artificial insemination and surgery don’t work.
Look out for a good treatment center and properly check all the options.
The procedure of surgery is quite complex and cumbersome. The first step in IVF involves injecting hormones so you produce multiple eggs each month instead of only one.You will then be tested to determine whether you're ready for egg retrieval.Immediately following the retrieval, your eggs will be mixed in the laboratory with your partner's sperm, which he will have donated on the same day.Depending on the clinic, you may even wait up to five days until the embryo reaches a more advanced blastocyst stage. You can contact many IVF treatment specialists in India.
Once the embryos are ready, you will return to the IVF facility so doctors can transfer one or more into your uterus. This procedure is quicker and easier than the retrieval of the egg. The doctor will insert a flexible tube called a catheter through your vagina and cervix and into your uterus, where the embryos will be deposited.
Talking about the success rate of IVF, it totally depends on the reason for infertility, where you are having the procedure done and your age. A woman’s age is very important in the procedure of IVF. For instance, a woman who is under age 35 and undergoes IVF has a 39.6% chance of having a baby while a woman over age 40 has an 11.5% chance.
IVF treatment is quite expensive. It costs around Rs 60,000-Rs80,000, inclusive of the prescribed medications and drugs.  However, most couple end up spending Rs 3lakhs-5lakhs on their IVF treatment. One may also need additional treatment depending upon the medical history and fertility levels.IVF treatment in India is quite feasible.
Risks associated with IVF-
  • 1.       Multiple births
  • 2.       Birth defects
  • 3.       miscarriage
  • 4.       ovarian cancer
